In the old days the winds were considered an act of gods. However, winds were used by people thousands of years before that as buoyancy for
ships. People built the first windmills though they did not know how and when the wind arises. Just a few hundred of years afterwards, through meteorology, wind was subjected to scientific research and was no longer attributed to gods.
The Adriatic wind rose is composed of eight primary winds, and each of the main wind directions stands for one of the eight fundamental aspects of the universe. Every wind has its characteristics that help us predict whether a wind is stronger or weaker, whether it will change its direction. The Adriatic wind rose also announces a wind. Good knowledge of wind can help us avoid something negative from happening.
Jugo is a southwestern wind of moderate strength that blows from the sea towards the mainland along the Croatian Adriatic coast. Jugo blows in the ESE, SE or SSE direction. Its characteristics are that it blows without interruption and gradually increases. It produces beautiful, long waves without noise and foam. Only when Jugo is strong the waves hit the coast and move noisily back into the open sea.
It gives all sailors the special experience of dynamic navigation on the sea with constant wind-filled sails, so the sailboat is ble to reach very high speed.
The bura is an unpredictable wind that blows from the mainland in gusts. It is relatively cold and dry, reaches moderate strength and can last for several hours. It purifies the air, therefore, the visibility following the bura is excellent and the weather sunny and cheerful.
Although the bura is primarily a winter wind, it blows throughout the year, especially in the morning, reaching an average speed of 11 m/ s. Because it blows from the mountain slopes towards the sea, it comes most often from the northeast, respectively, from NNE, NE or ENE. On the open sea, the bura often changes to Northwestern direction.
The Bura is well-known for its "moodiness" as well as the fact that it often blows in gusts and that it begins to blow just as suddenly and often unexpectedly with the gusts of wind accompanied by howling noise. The gushes of wind can be interrupted for one or several minutes of calm or weak winds.
If, when sailing along the island facing the mainland coast, you take a zone without vegetation, you have to expect a particularly strong Bura. Sailing during Bura means that there will be no lack of excitement, because this is really a great challenge that requires prudence and caution both regarding preparations of the boat and in terms of the team. Sailing in small sailboats during Bura is recommended only for really excellent sailors.
